Serie A’s Monza player Alejandro Papu Gomez has received a two-year ban for the use of a prohibited substance. Gomez, who was part of the FIFA World Cup-winning team in Qatar 2022 alongside Lionel Messi, faced an anti-doping test in October 2022 in Sevilla, as reported by the Spanish daily Relevo on Thursday.
Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano further corroborated the news with a tweet, confirming Alejandro Papu’s two-year ban.
On his social media, he posted, “Papu Gómez has been banned from professional football for the next two years. Gómez failed an anti-doping test as he tested positive in October 2022 at Sevilla — before the World Cup. Italian side Monza confirm they’ve just been informed by FIFA”.
The report indicated that Papu was unaware of the banned substance and explained that he had inadvertently taken it from one of his children while he was unwell after the Sevilla training session.
Former Sevilla player Gomez decided to join Serie A club Monza amid a financially turbulent period at Sevilla. Gomez’s record with Sevilla includes 10 goals and six assists in 90 matches.
