Just In: Tribunal Sack Kano State Governor Yusuf Abba Kabir (NNPP)

On September 20, 2023, the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal issued a verdict that led to the removal of Abba Kabir Yusuf from his position as the governor of Kano State. The tribunal’s decision declared Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election that took place on March 18.

In its ruling, the tribunal ordered Yusuf, the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), to return the election certificate to the rightful winner, allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue it to Nasiru.

Initially, Yusuf was declared the winner by INEC, which led the APC candidate to express dissatisfaction and take the matter to the tribunal.

During the tribunal proceedings, a 3-man panel presiding over the case invalidated 165,663 votes from the NNPP’s tally. This decision was based on the assertion that these ballot papers lacked the necessary signatures and stamps, rendering them invalid.

Subsequently, the All Progressives Congress Party is now poised to receive the certificate of victory from Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
